Here are all the statistical highlights from England’s 24-run victory in Manchester to level the series.
by SampathEngland stood alive in the three-match ODI series against Australia after they pulled off a 24-run victory in the second game. England lost both openers cheaply after electing to bat first but Eoin Morgan’s 52-ball 42 kept the hosts hanging around. But Adam Zampa’s 3-wicket haul saw England stumble to 149/8 by 41st over. Tom Curran (37) and Adil Rashid (35*) played a key role in getting England to 231/9 following a 76-run partnership for the 9th wicket from only 57 balls.
The 3rd wicket stand between Aaron Finch (73) and Marnus Labuschagne (48) worth 107 runs put Australia in a position of sealing the series. But Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes picked three wickets apiece to see the Aussies crumble from 144/2 to 147/6. Sam Curran’s 3-wicket haul in his second spell left the visitors to 176/9 who eventually got bowled out for 207 in the penultimate over.
Here are all the statistical highlights from England’s 24-run victory in Manchester to level the series:
England’s sensational comeback:
149/8 – England’s total of 149 at the fall of the 8th wicket is the lowest total from which they won an ODI after electing to bat first. 149/8 is the 3rd lowest first-innings total at the fall of the 8th wicket in an ODI by England from where they ended up winning. (Unaffected matches)
England defeated Pakistan by 14 runs in the 1979 CWC match after being 118/8 and thumped Australia by 101 runs in the 1977 Birmingham ODI from 145/8.
2000 – The last instance of Australia losing an ODI after restricting the opposition to 149/8 or a worse score after 8 wickets in the first innings was back in 2000. They reduced Pakistan to 127/8 in the 2000 C&U Series hosted by Brisbane.
England’s rare win while defending a low total:
231/9 – The total of 231/9 is the lowest England successfully defended in an ODI under Eoin Morgan. This is also the lowest total that England defended since the 171 against South Africa during the 2011 CWC match. (50-over games)
232 – The target of 232 is the 2nd lowest which Australia failed to chase in the last ten years. They lost to South Africa by 47 runs while chasing a target of 190 during the 2016 WI Tri-series game.
1995 – The last instance of England successfully defending a total lower than 250 in an ODI against Australia was way back in 1995. (Unaffected ODIs) England won the B&H World Series match at MCG while defending a total of 225/8. Overall, the total of 231/9 on Sunday is the joint 5th lowest which England successfully defended against Australia in an ODI.
Morgan’s 100th win:
1 – Eoin Morgan became the first to win 100 matches as captain of the England team in International cricket. He is also the 15th captain overall across Men’s cricket (13) and Women’s cricket (2) to win 100 International matches.
1 – Eoin Morgan is now the first captain in International cricket with 100 or more victories even before making his Test captaincy debut. On Sunday, he became just the 7th captain with 100+ wins in limited-overs Internationals after Ricky Ponting (172), MS Dhoni (151), Graeme Smith (110), Allan Border (107), Meg Lanning (102) and Stephen Fleming (100).
A collective effort from England bowlers:
1 – The Manchester ODI on Sunday witnessed the first-ever instance of three bowlers picking up at least three wickets in an ODI match for England. Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran picked up three wickets apiece.
Economical performances from new ball bowlers:
2 – Only the 2nd time since the start of 2002 that all the four new ball bowlers in a Men’s ODI conceded less than 40 runs even after bowling full 10 overs. The 2014 Adelaide ODI also between Australia and England was the other such instance.
6 – As many as six bowlers in this match conceded less than 40 runs in their full quota of ten overs; the joint-most number of bowlers with an economy less than four in a Men’s ODI since 2002. The previous such instance during an ODI hosted by England came during the 2000 Lord’s ODI between England and Zimbabwe.
Maidens galore:
7 – The seven maiden overs played out by England in this match are the most in more than 12 years by them during an ODI. England played out eight maidens during the 2008 Bristol ODI against New Zealand. The English team also faced seven maiden overs during the 2009 Bridgetown ODI against West Indies.
