A man accused of trying to rape a minor girl fled from police custody when the vehicle he was being taken in, stopped for refuelling at a petrol pump in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Lucknow: In a major embarrassment for Lakhimpur Kheri Police, a man accused of trying to rape a minor girl fled from police custody while being taken to the police station after the vehicle in which he was being taken stopped at a petrol pump for refuelling on Sunday. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms.
Two police personnel, a constable and a home guard jawan, were shifting the accused, identified as Hiralal, to the police station on a motorcycle. On the way, they stopped for refuelling the vehicle at a petrol pump when Hiralal escaped. The viral video shows him in a white shirt and brown pants being chased by one of the two cops.
Combing operations by several teams
Subsequently, several teams were deployed to trace him and he was nabbed on Sunday. Police force from three police stations was deployed to nab the accused, Lakhimpur Kheri Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Arun Kumar Singh said, adding that the negligence of the police will be probed and strict action will be taken against the guilty.
An FIR has been registered against the two police personnel who were accompanying him, ANI reported.
Charges against accused
Hiralal had allegedly attempted to sexually assault a minor girl in the district’s Mitual area. Mituali police station SHO Anil Kumar told The Times of India that a case was registered against him under IPC Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with the intent to outrage her modesty and the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
