‘So impressed’: Michael Owen has high hopes for Leeds United after season opener

by

Leeds United have been the talk of the Premier League after the opening round of fixtures, putting in an impressive display against the reigning champions Liverpool.

The newly-promoted West Yorkshire side lost 4-3 and were simply punished for defensive errors against a Liverpool team who ended up feeling lucky to come away with all three points.

But it was a performance that has caught the eye of football pundits and ex-players, especially those of a former Liverpool persuasion.

One such example was Michael Owen.

The former England striker and current BT Sport pundit was delighted by the effort Leeds put in and tweeted immediately after the game yesterday to praise Bielsa’s boys for their display.

He has not stopped there either. After West Brom lost 3-0 to Leicester City this weekend, they joined Leeds and Fulham in also losing their first game as a newly promoted team. The three teams have conceded 10 goals between them, with Fulham also losing 3-0 to Arsenal.

For Owen, it is a sure sign that two of the promoted teams will struggle to stay up, but not Leeds, who he sees having an entirely different season.

Leeds United fans would undoubtedly settle for a top-half finish this season but also know their defending will need to be much better in order to do so.

Hopefully, Owen’s assessment proves true come the end of the season.
