Rangers will ramp up their pursuit of new recruits following Steven Gerrard’s demand for reinforcements to his injury-hit squad.

Top of the list is Preston star Daniel Johnson with sources in England claiming a deal was edging closer.

Johnson, who is into the final nine months of his contract, was bombed from the matchday squad for Saturday’s loss to Swansea and would ease the strain on Gerrard’s midfield which has seen Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack sidelined by injury.

With Gerrard desperate to bolster his ranks, Ibrox sporting director Ross Wilson confirmed the summer transfer plan is not yet complete.

The situation has increased the pressure on the Ibrox recruitment department to ensure Rangers’ blistering start to the campaign is not undone by injuries.

Wilson, meanwhile, has promised Rangers fans – and Gerrard – his department is working overtime to bring in more new faces.

He told RangersTV: “We went in with a clear plan and that’s not finished yet.

Steven went on the record to confirm we are still in the market and are still looking to enhance the squad.

“But we will only do so if it’s a deal that’s right for Rangers and a profile that’s right for Rangers.”
