Liverpool, Man Utd learn huge costs of Mbappe deal as Man City join race

It would cost £300m for any club to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain next summer, according to a report.

News emerged over the weekend claiming that Mbappe has told PSG he plans to leave at the end of the season. The French World Cup winner believes he would have a better chance of winning the Champions League elsewhere.

It has immediately led to talk of a three-way transfer tussle between Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid. And now, The Sun have added a fourth name into contention – Manchester City.

According to the tabloid, City could fund a move for Mbappe with the money they had set aside for Lionel Messi.

City appeared to be genuine contenders for Messi’s signature when the Argentine legend told Barcelona he wanted to leave in the summer. However, he has since backed away from those wishes.

The report claims City feel that Mbappe would bring a similar level of global appeal, with the investment repaying itself from corporate income.

However, signing Mbappe will not come on the cheap. According to The Sun, PSG will want £300m for the 21-year-old.

That would be nearly double what they paid Monaco for him in 2017, and would see him overtake Neymar as the world’s most expensive player of all-time.

What’s more, Mbappe would want his wages to increase to £20m-per-season. Over a five-year contract, that would represent an additional £100m outlay.

Despite the huge costs of the deal, The Sun claim that City, United and Madrid would all be willing to meet those requirements.

Liverpool reluctant to spend

Liverpool, on the other hand, would be hesitant. They have not spent heavily since the arrivals of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk completed their puzzle.

In fact, the report adds that one of Liverpool’s front three would have to leave before they could think about signing Mbappe.

Sadio Mane is said to be the most likely candidate. That’s because he is yet to commit his future beyond the expiration of his contract in 2023.

Real Madrid also have an interest in Mane, although they would have to pay £150m for him.

However, working in Liverpool’s favour is the fact that Mbappe admires coach Jurgen Klopp – who, like Real, tried to sign him before he went to PSG.

“This season, Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League,” Mbappe said in May.

“They have made winning look easy but the truth is that it is never easy. Performances like they have been having don’t just happen.

“To be as ruthless as they have been would come from lots of hard work in training and from having a very good manager.”
