Big Sean’s Detroit 2 Album Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart, Beats 6ix9ine by 50,000 Units

The final numbers are in, and Big Sean's new Detroit 2 album has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, besting 6ix9ine's TattleTales album by 50,000 units.

On Sunday (Sept. 13), Billboard unveiled the top 10 of the latest U.S. album's chart and Sean Don sits in the top spot with the 103,000 equivalent album units his latest project moved. The total includes 2,000 traditional album sales. This is Sean's third consecutive No. 1 album, following Dark Sky Paradise (2015) and I Decided (2017).

Sean's fifth solo studio album is 21 songs deep and features guest appearances from Eminem, Post Malone, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Nipsey Hussle, Royce 5'9", Dwele, Diddy, Kash Doll and more. The G.O.O.D. Music rapper dethrones Taylor Swift's Folklore album, which had sustained the No. 1 spot for a record-breaking six weeks straight.

Initially projected to go No. 1, Tekashi debuts in the No. 4 spot, with a final tally of 53,000 units pushed. The TattleTales sophomore LP, which features Nicki Minaj and Akon, was first forecasted to move in the area of 150,000 units, which would have easily made it the top album of the week. However, a day later, the projected numbers were adjusted and 100,000 units were taken off after presumably being deemed ineligible.

The forecast fluctuated during the week, finally settling at a modest 53,000. Though he's taken shots from his fellow rappers over the numbers and complained about the lack of promotion on streaming services, the Brooklyn rapper-federal informant has been taking it in stride and making fun of himself on Instagram.

Other hip-hop artists in the top 10 of this week's Billboard 200 chart include Pop Smoke (Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon, No. 2), Juice Wrld (Legends Never Die, No. 3), Lil Baby (My Turn, No. 7), Rod Wave (Pray 4 Love, No. 8), DaBaby (Blame It on Baby, No. 9) and Post Malone (Hollywood's Bleeding, No. 10) .

A$AP Rocky, At. Long. Last. A$AP

2015 was both a trying and important year in A$AP Rocky's career as he was already rising up the ranks of stardom, thanks to the fan base he already built for himself. His sophomore album, At. Long. Last. A$AP, was announced in 2014 by A$AP Yams, and on the way to its creation, the heart and soul of the crew died at the start of 2015. With one of his best friend's death on his shoulders, Rocky pushed forward to create the LP Yams would've wanted for the rapper. Rocky was ready to release his album on June 2, 2015, but leaks forced him to drop the project the week before that. Even with all the difficulties swirling around it, At. Long. Last. A$AP ended up as Rocky's second Billboard 200 album chart No. 1 debut. The rap star showcased a style that evolved into other genres with songs like "LSD" and "Everyday."

Azealia Banks, Broke With Expensive Taste

Fans that have to wait a long time for a rapper's debut album is a very risky situation in hip-hop. Azealia Banks knew this, but it wasn't entirely her fault considering she had various label issues throughout her career. After her 2011 song "212" blew up, it would be another three years until fans would get her debut album. Broke With Expensive Taste finally dropped on Nov. 7, 2014 with no heads-up. After turning herself into a breath of fresh air through her attitude, lyrical ability and mix of dance music and hip-hop, this offering truly delivered. The public reception was that Banks really did it, and in her own way. The dance between more traditional hip-hop ("212," the song that got her hot), more pop-tinged work ("Gimme A Chance") and 1990's dance ("Soda") was unique then and still is now.

Future, DS2

In 2015, Future's lead up to DS2, his third album (and to some fans, the best of his discography), was incredible. After his three-peat with Monster, 56 Nights and Beast Mode, Future was scorching hot. Whatever he dropped next would seemingly be a success and he delivered on the expectations. The Atlanta rapper released DS2 on July 17, 2015, after announcing it just seven days earlier. The album is a perfect summary of who Future was at the time, a man engaged in stick talk, blowing a bag and serving the base. His LP sold 151,000 copies in the first week, sealing the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. This project, and its subsequent success, proved that Future could do it on every level, be it mixtapes or albums. The Freebandz general could no longer be denied.

J. Cole, 2014 Forest Hills Drive

Announced on Nov. 16, 2014, then dropping a month later on Dec. 9 with no promotion, J. Cole's 2014 Forest Hills Drive album caught fans of the Dreamville Records head honcho off guard. Named after the street his childhood home was located on, the album was personal, detailing Cole's journey from a kid in Fayetteville, N.C. to a true rap star. His story resonated, to the tune of 353,000 units sold in its first week. Successful singles like "Wet Dreamz" and "No Role Modelz" helped him get there. Cole garnered a lot of his appeal from framing himself as a regular guy, facing the same issues as his fans. Now, he was a superstar. This album solidified Cole's star turn, and he's only burned brighter since.

Kanye West, Yeezus

In a move that speaks to the hold Kanye West had on music at the time, he simply tweeted, "June Eighteen" on May 1, 2013. Everyone took this to mean his album, Yeezus, would drop that day, and they were correct. With the promo for the album consisting of projections of a visual for the song "New Slaves" on walls across the world and a Saturday Night Live performance, ’Ye wanted the music to speak for itself. And that it did, selling 327,000 copies in its first week and sounding like nothing else in hip-hop. Yeezus is a mix of fury ("New Slaves," "On Sight") and thoughtfulness ("Blood on the Leaves," "Guilt Trip"), proving that Kanye has never been afraid of experimenting with his sound.

Kendrick Lamar, To Pimp a Butterfly

The Kendrick Lamar of today is both a rap superstar and an elite lyricist. His third studio album, To Pimp a Butterfly, is what launched him into the stratosphere. The Compton, Calif. MC decided to keep his fans on their toes by releasing the project eight days early on March 15, 2015, instead of the originally scheduled release date on March 23. After selling 363,000 copies in a week and housing multiple Grammy Award-winning songs ("i," "These Walls" and "Alright,") Kendrick's stature in hip-hop was forever changed. An album that is so heavily about the Black experience being embraced so fully by the world speaks volumes to Kendrick's appeal. The aforementioned "Alright" went on to become a Black Lives Matter (and Black culture, period) protest anthem.

Lil Uzi Vert, Eternal Atake

Waiting years for Lil Uzi Vert to release Eternal Atake felt like an extended game of keep-away, but it was all worth it. First announced in July of 2018, it took two years for Baby Pluto to give the world the most anticipated album of his career. The opus landed on streaming services on March 6, 2020 with little warning. The road to get to Eternal Atake was long and winding (label drama and song leaks included), but the music showed Uzi still had the hits and star power within him. He definitely fed fans first by dropping "Futsal Shuffle 2020" and "That Way" before the album arrived. He also was nice enough to let fans vote for the cover art a few days before the shock release. Eternal Atake is packed with energy, as you can expect from Uzi, but he's also really rhyming, dancing all over beats and sounding fully engaged while he's at it. The LP predictably went No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Then he dropped Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World 2 a week later as a deluxe edition of the album, earning him another No. 1 in the process.

Playboi Carti, Die Lit

Playboi Carti already had the success of his 2017 hit song "Magnolia" under his belt, along with his self-titled debut mixtape before debut album, Die Lit arrived a year later. To promo the LP before it was delivered to the masses, the Atlanta rapper announced it on Twitter, the day before its official May 11, 2018 release. He then performed songs from the LP for the first time at Rolling Loud on the same day, just as fans began to learn the songs. Die Lit encapsulates Carti's style; not technical but creative, with attention grabbing-flows and a real feel for putting songs together. From the wild single "R.I.P" to the high-pitched baby voice showcased as "Flatbed Freestyle," Carti delivered on his early promise quickly. Now, if we could just get Whole Lotta Red.

The Carters, Everything Is Love

Jay-Z and Beyoncé are the definition of a power couple, and after being on the road touring together for a significant part of their careers, the next step for them was a long-rumored collab album. In a move that few other artists could pull, Beyoncé announced that she had a surprise for the audience at the June 16, 2018 date of her and Hov's On The Run II Tour. The video for the single "Apeshit" began to play in the arena, then "ALBUM OUT NOW" flashed on the screen. Everything Is Love was released to the Tidal streaming platform at that very moment, and then to all platforms on June 18. In addition to lauded tracks like "Apeshit" and "Friends," Jay and Bey play off each other, delivering honest, quote-worthy rhymes about life as a couple facing public scrutiny and their ups and downs on songs like "LoveHappy" and boasting about their success and "touring out arenas" on "Nice," all while still giving rap fans those stellar bars to bump.
