A cheaper Apple Watch could be announced next week, to come in two sizes

Apple is set to hold a special event next week, and the company is expected to focus on the Apple Watch and iPad, with an iPhone announcement seemingly being delayed. The Apple Watch gets refreshes pretty much every year, but this year, it's been reported that Apple may actually introduce two new models, one of which being a more affordable alternative.

Now, leaker Jon Prosser has shared some tidbits of information about the purported device. According to a tweet posted today, this cheaper Apple Watch will feature a design similar to the Apple Watch Series 4, which is most similar to the current Apple Watch look. The Apple Watch Series 4 was introduced in 2018 with smaller bezels and a larger screen, which was big news at the time.

The cheaper Apple Watch is also said to come in the usual two sizes - 40mm and 44mm - and there will be both GPS-only and cellular variants, just as with every other Apple Watch model. The biggest difference pointed out by Prosser is the lack of an ECG feature, which debuted with the Series 4. It also won't feature an always-on display.

Prosser also notes something interesting about the upcoming Apple Watch devices; as the devices are being internally referred to as Apple Watch and Apple Watch Pro. This seems to suggest that Apple will use the usual Watch moniker to refer to cheaper models, and adopting the new Pro name for the line that is essentially the successor to the current Apple Watch. This transition would be somewhat reminiscent of the transition from the iPhone XR and XS to the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, so it wouldn't be surprising. We shouldn't have long to wait to know for sure if that will be the case.
