Gary Stevens believes Tottenham should consider Championship number nine

by

Gary Stevens has told Stadium Astro that he believes Watford skipper Troy Deeney would be open to joining Tottenham Hotspur and thinks the Hornets striker would be a “good asset”, should Spurs consider a move.

Deeney, 32, has made no secret of his desire to leave Watford and return to the Premier League following his side’s relegation to the Championship. That is, despite Deeney netting 10 goals in 27 top-flight appearances for Watford last term.

The uncapped Englishman has entered the final 12 months of his Watford contract, and Sky Sports have recently claimed that Deeney – who earns £65,000 a week (Spotrac) at Watford – is being eyed by both Tottenham and West Brom.

Former Spurs man Stevens was asked who would suit Spurs and stated that he would consider a forward from a relegated club. He states that while Josh King might be a good signing, Deeney would be ideal – and reckons Deeney would want to join Spurs.

“I always look at the clubs that have been relegated at the back end of last season,” Stevens said. “Who might be available? Callum Wilson was a player who I though Spurs might go for, Josh King is a possibility.

“Troy Deeney at Watford. Many Spurs fans would think he isn’t for us, but I have a feeling Deeney would be a good asset for Spurs. He would be happy to go to Spurs, he would be happy to be a bit-part player, offers something different.”

TBR’s view – Deeney is the ideal Mourinho striker

Throughout Mourinho’s past, it is clear that the Portuguese gaffer prefers to use a striker that is strong in the air. Didier Drogba, Romelu Lukaku, Diego Milito and plenty more have thrived under the Special One.

Powerful, strong in the air, excellent within the penalty area and from the spot, Deeney would be an ideal signing. He also boasts leadership, a bit of nastiness and the experience required to thrive in the Premier League.
