Oculus Quest 2 detailed in official video published early on Facebook's Blueprint site

by

The sequel to the original, and hugely successful, Oculus Quest 2 has been revealed early in a post published to Facebook’s Blueprint website. The video shows the revised headset and controllers up close with a raft of improvements made across the board. There is a redesigned strap, the headset itself is shallower and lighter while the cameras have been optimized to support hand tracking and gestures.

Inside, Oculus has made substantial upgrades to the processing power over the original Quest. Where that headset was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835-based mobile VR platform, the new Quest 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 855-based XR2 VR-optimized chipset. It brings substantially improved graphics performance as well as 3D positional audio. This is mated to a healthy 6 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage.

Although apparently switching from OLED panels to LCD panels, resolution has been bumped up to just under 2K per eye for a nearly 4K immersive experience. The controllers have also been upgraded with optimized ergonomics. Although the headset can play games completely wirelessly using the onboard processing, the headset can also be connected to a PC for full-powered PC-based VR games as well.

Pricing and launch details are still to come and are expected to be revealed tomorrow.
