Handed out by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities

Waterloo Region's light rail transit system, ION, has won a 2020 Sustainable Communities Award for exceptional work in transportation.

The awards honour and celebrate the most innovative environmental initiatives in cities and communities across the country.

Regional Chair Karen Redman said the region is both proud and honoured to have been selected as the recipient.

"ION truly has been a transformative project for our region. It has shaped the community and the positive impacts will be seen and felt for generations to come." she said in a release.

The region was one of 11 municipalities chosen by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for outstanding efforts in one of nine categories including transportation, waste, and neighbourhoods.

Winners will each deliver a live TED-talk-style presentation on their projects at FCM's virtual Sustainable Communities Conference in late October.

Recipients in each category are also up for the Inspire Award, given to the most innovative and creative project.
