Retail Inflation Eases In Aug But Stays Above RBI's Tolerance Level

On Monday, data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed retail inflation for August at 6.69 percent from 6.73 percent in the previous month. CPI core inflation was recorded at 5.8 percent as compared to 5.7 percent in July.

Food inflation eased in August to 9.05 percent from 9.27 percent in July. Inflation in urban India stood at 6.8 percent paced ahead of inflation in rural India at 6.66 percent in August for the first time since the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March.

Further, rising food inflation has pushed inflation to 6.9 percent in July, higher than the upper band of the central bank's 2-6 percent target range.

The vegetable inflation rose marginally to 11.41 percent from 11.29 percent while fuel & light inflation increased to 3.10 percent from 2.80 percent.
