From Fanen Ihyongo, Kano

The Kano Integrity and Justice Forum (KIJF), a non-governmental organisation of elder statesmen, academics, professionals and businessmen in the private sector has thrown its weight behind Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s plan to develop a Light Rail Transit Project in Kano metropolis.

The KIJF condemned Bashir Tofa-led group which kicked against the project in a communique issued at the end of a one-day seminar organised with a view to obtaining private and public responses on the project, held at Bristol Palace Hotel, Kano.

The communique, signed by the chairman and secretary, Prof. Abdu Salihi and Dr. Garba Shehu said Kano was a major commercial and industrial city in Nigeria and the African Sub-Saharan region dating back to centuries and, therefore, needs to develop its transportation infrastructure to cope with increasing needs and demands locally and globally.

‘’This decision is the right one considering all that has been examined in this seminar, where it was shown that Kano could afford to be behind in these global trends taking place, whereby cities are making efforts to upgrade their transport infrastructures to be in-tune with the 21st century.”

It said, while considering the economic challenges and disadvantages before individuals, families and businesses, the implementation of the Light Rail project will open opportunities for the benefit of every individual nationwide.
