The Boys Season 3: What We Know So Far

As someone with an unabashed adoration for all things superhero, I was skeptical of the satirical comic book series The Boys, in which the caped crusaders are corrupt money grubbers and the everyman is the real do-gooder round here. Such a metaphor felt a little too populist, a little too on the nose for our trying times. And though Amazon Prime’s hit series definitely trips up now and again—the gleeful gore and explicit sex sometimes work to undermine rather than support the satire—the show’s creators have nevertheless created a universe that viewers care about (if only because they love taking shots at DC and Marvel). When The Boys does its job peeling back the problematic nature of Captain America culture, it’s a powerfully captivating show.

So fans will be thrilled to know a Season 3 has already been ordered—and there are lots of juicy details to chew on while we wait for it to drop.

The show was renewed for Season 3 before Season 2 even released.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait to know if we’ll see Butcher and his crew back on our screens again. During The Boys’ panel at Comic-Con@Home in July, showrunner Eric Kripke announced, “Amazon, in a bold and historic push to expand their ‘weirdo’ demographic, has greenlit Season 3 of The Boys.”

Pandemic permitting, the cast and crew plan to reconvene in January and start shooting, per Collider. That could mean we get a Season 3 by the end of 2021.

The writers already have material ready to go.

During that same Comic-Con panel, Kripke also shared that quarantine fatigue hasn’t been an issue for any of the talented scriptwriters on the show. They’re hard at work, and they have stories ready to go when production time comes. “We’re sad to say, the world has given us way too much material,” Kripke said.

In an interview with Collider, he revealed specifically that the first four scripts of the next season are finished (though perhaps not finalized), and the writers hold daily Zoom calls. So don’t worry about any lost momentum during the pandemic. Your Boys are coming back swinging.

A familiar face will appear in Season 3.

If you’ve spent any amount of time on Tumblr—or, really, any corner of the Internet—I can guarantee you’ll recognize the handsome mug of one Jensen Ackles, famous for playing Dean Winchester on the long-running CW series Supernatural. And if you’re an OG Supernatural addict (as I once was), you’ll know Kripke is the creator of the wildly successful series, and he loves Ackles. So it comes as no shock that the actor’s next move after wrapping the final season of Supernatural this year is to make the jump to The Boys.

And when I say Kripke loves Ackles, he really loves Ackles. Seriously, read his statement the following statement.

“When I was a child, I had a crazy, impossible dream—to provide Jensen Ackles with gainful employment. I’m happy to say that dream has come true. Jensen is an amazing actor, an even better person, smells like warm chocolate chip cookies, and I consider him a brother.”

Ackles will play Soldier Boy, a Captain America spoof not entirely unlike Homelander, except that Soldier Boy’s the first superhero in the universe of The Boys. Like his Marvel counterpart, Steve Rogers, he fought in World War II.

There’s an end in sight.

We don’t yet know if The Boys will be renewed beyond Season 3, but there’s evidence the series might be headed toward a close. In an interview with GamesRadar+, executive producer Seth Rogen said, “[Showrunner] Eric [Kripke] does have an ending in mind that he likes and is working towards. But I do also know how fluid these things are. I know some of my favorite shows were not plotted out incredibly specifically, but, to my knowledge, he has an endgame in sight and an ideal number of seasons in his head.”

No clue yet if that’s four or 400 seasons, but if The Boys is really committed to poking fun at the superhero mega-franchises, maybe it’ll just run on forever. In the meantime, we have plenty of comic-book movies to binge.
