British design pioneer Sir Terence Conran passed away this weekend
by Rosella Degori14 September 2020: The design world lost a great this weekend with the passing of Habitat and Design Museum founder Sir Terence Conran at the age of 88.
Conran trained as an architect and designer and launched his furniture retailer Habitat in the 1960s, which introduced flat-pack furniture to the UK and exported British design across the globe.
His extraordinary career also saw him found his eponymous store in 1973 – and rehabilitate Art Deco landmark, the Michelin House, as its flagship in 1987. This landmark restoration triggering the regeneration of Brompton Cross as a design destination.
Conran was knighted in 1983 and founded the Design Museum in 1989.
The Design Museum’s former director Deyan Dujkic said: ‘No one has done more to create modern Britain than Terence Conran. He spent his whole career looking for ways to make life better for everyone.’
