Protesters gather after police shoot and kill man welding knife in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Protesters took to the streets in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, after authorities said city police officers shot and killed a 27-year-old who was brandishing a knife Sunday afternoon.

Within hours of the shooting, at least 100 people gathered to protest. Law enforcement used tear gas and made arrests overnight, and the police station was damaged during the protests.

Lancaster city police were dispatched to a private residence in response to a domestic disturbance call. When police arrived, Ricardo Munoz "immediately emerges from inside and runs toward the officer, brandishing a knife above his head, in clear view, in a threatening manner," according to the district attorney's office. That's when the officer fired.

The district attorney's office, which is investigating the shooting, said no one else was struck by gunfire and released the officer's body-camera footage as they do all police-involved shootings. The officer involved in the shooting has reportedly been placed on administrative leave.

“A police-involved shooting has significant impact on a community, as we are seeing with the large number of individuals gathering in the streets,” District Attorney Heather Adams said in a statement. “However, I am asking that all reaction be tempered as the investigation is ongoing. We will do our best to release details about the incident in a timely manner. We ask that acts of protest remain peaceful as violence and destruction of property will become headlines and serve no purpose for the safety and wellbeing of our citizens and neighborhoods."

The protest after the incident is reminiscent of others this year, starting with George Floyd, a black man who died in Minneapolis police custody after a white officer pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for several minutes, in which people have demonstrated against police brutality and racial inequality.
