Virgil van Dijk insists he was trying to do his best and wasn't being arrogant against Leeds, despite Jamie Carragher's claim to the contrary.

The Liverpool centre-back, who is normally a very safe pair of hands, was far from his best against newly promoted Leeds on Saturday.

Van Dijk was solely at fault for the away side's second in Liverpool's 4-3 win, after he lazily failed to clear a long ball into the area.

The loose ball was picked up by Leeds striker Patrick Bamford, who fired home, prompting an immediate response from Carragher providing commentary for Sky Sports.

"That's just too arrogant," said the former Liverpool centre-back.

"He tries to flick it around rather than just dealing with it. Maybe that's because it's Leeds United, a new team, and he thinks it's a little bit too easy.

"But Patrick Bamford has been given a gift by that man."

Responding to the criticism on beIN SPORTS, Van Dijk said: "It was one of thoseā€¦ they are situations that can happen.

"I always try to do my best and that's what I did. Unfortunately a goal came from it but I don't worry about that."

He added: "We expected an intense match.

"No one wants to concede goals but it was intense for both teams. We trained for that and we knew that could happen.

"The points are massive of course. They [Leeds] will trouble many teams in the league I think so it was good for us to get the three points. But we still have things to work on."
