Edo governorship: Ize-Iyamu says Obaseki was not qualified to gain admission into UI

Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Edo governorship election has said Governor Godwin Obaseki was not qualified to be admitted to the University of Ibadan in 1976.

Ize-Iyamu made the claim on Sunday, September 13, during a governorship debate organised by Channels TV, Premium Times reported.

The APC candidate argued that records show that the governor failed his school certificate exams.

He stated that Obaseki had just three credits, without english and mathematics, noting that such a result would have even been difficult to qualify for A Level.

Ize-Iyamu also challenged the Edo governor to produce his A Level result if he had any.

However, Obaseki explained that he was admitted to the University of Ibadan at the time there was no JAMB.

He stated that the authorities of the institution had since come out to confirm his graduation.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that it has uncovered a plan by Bola Tinubu and other chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to spend N300m in buying votes during the Edo governorship election.

The campaign council of the Edo state PDP made the allegation at a media briefing in Benin City, The Guardian reported.

A spokesperson for the Edo campaign council, Chris Nehikhare claimed the N300m budgeted for the vote-buying would be sourced from council areas in Lagos state.

In other news, a former chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, has reacted to the allegation levelled against him by Maryann Shaibu, the wife of Edo state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.

The deputy governor's wife had alleged that Oshiomhole was behind an alleged threat to her life and family.

But Oshiomhole through his media aide, Victor Oshioke dismissed Shaibu’s wife’s petition as a futile attempt to divert attention from her trending video threatening to flog women if they attend any event other than the one she organised.

Still on politics, a civil society group, No Sidon Look, has held a voter education rally in Benin city, the Edo state capital, to sensitise the electorate on the need to turn out en masse on Saturday, September 19 to exercise their franchise.

The group specifically tasked the people of Edo to vote for a candidate with the pedigree and knowledge to sustain and improve on the present level of development in the state.

The group also reaffirmed its support for the reelection of Governor Godwin Obaseki, urging eligible voters in the state to vote for the PDP to enable the governor to continue with his numerous achievements in the last three years and nine months.
