West Brom were given a big wake-up call by Leicester City as the Foxes handed out a clinical 3-0 defeat to the newcomers at The Hawthorns.

What at one stage promised to be a tough task for Leciester turned out to be a stroll in the sunshine as debutant Timothy Castagne headed them in front before two Jamies Vardy penalties sealed the three points.

If gives Slaven Bilic some kind of idea of the task in front of his side, who matched last season's fifth-placed finishers for much of the first half, but saw their defensive errors punished clinically by true Premier League quality.

By contrast, it was the perfect start to the season for Brendan Rodgers as his side battled into contention before running away with the game, with his star striker netting twice while they also welcomed back James Maddison after his injury problems.

Two-goal Vardy was delighted with Leicester’s opening win and revealed he had made up his mind where he was going to place both penalties.

“It’s massive for us, especially with how we finished last season,” Vardy told Sky Sports. “We’ve not had long to come back in this season, so to start with three points, we’re delighted.

“I practice a few (penalties) the day before every week. I was hitting them in the exact same spot yesterday so there was no way I was going to change my mind with the second one either.”

Vardy celebrated his second penalty by cupping his ears to the empty stands at the Hawthorns.

“I’ve enjoyed playing here over the years, getting a few goals, so I just thought I’d celebrate for them watching at home,” he said.

Vardy was also impressed by summer signing Castagne, who had opened the scoring on his debut.

“He’s been brilliant. He’s only trained a couple of days with us and you’ve seen with his performance, he’s got loads of qualities and to be coming in at the back post like that, when he’s technically playing right-back is brilliant for him.”
