Pundit picks two areas of weakness in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad
Jamie Redknapp has warned Liverpool that they could be left short in the centre-back position if they don’t strengthen their squad, and has also urged them to keep hold of Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Reds have been questioned for their lack of incomings this summer, particularly after allowing a number of players to leave.
Kostas Tsimikas has been the only major arrival, signing from Olympiacos to provide competition to Andy Robertson. Meanwhile, the likes of Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana have been allowed to leave, with more departures expected.
And Redknapp has suggested the £10.9million sale of Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg in particular could come back to bite them if they don’t bring in a replacement.
Redknapp told Sky Sports: “History suggests that you normally have to go out and buy one or two players to strengthen the squad. I think people have said in the last few weeks ‘why haven’t Liverpool tried to get Thiago’ or get one or two players in, maybe a bit more strength in the centre back area.
“They’ve lost Lovren and that leaves you quite short with [Joel] Matip, [Joe] Gomez and [Virgil] van Dijk. From there point of view, you just hope they don’t get any injures because if they were to get any injuries in that area they would be short.
“Especially when Gomez has had knee injuries and Matip can’t always play the full season. So you might think that could be an area where they could struggle.”
Matip missed 20 games with a knee injury last term, while Gomez managed to get through a full season without picking up a lengthy injury for the first time during his time on Merseyside.
Wijnaldum one of the world’s best midfielders
The former Liverpool man also believes that Jurgen Klopp would be better off keeping Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Barcelona to link up with compatriot Ronald Koeman.
Speculation also suggests that he could be sold in order to raise funds for a swoop for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara.

The transfer saga shows no sign of ending soon and could prove to be a disruption within the Liverpool camp. But Redknapp says the champions shouldn’t even consider selling Wijnaldum due to what he offers on the pitch.
“Certainly in midfield as well, the Gini Wijnaldum situation is one that needs to be resolved,” he continued.
“I think personally you’d want to keep him. He’s such an important player for the team, very talented, incredible energy. Why would you want to let him go at moment unless you can get someone that’s better?
“I don’t see that many midfield player that are better in the world right now who can do what he can do.”
It is being reported that Klopp held talks with Wijnaldum yesterday in an attempt to find a resolution to his future.
It is understood the player is showing no desire to leave, but is in the final year of his contract and is not close to agreeing to an extension. Negotiations over a new deal stalled earlier this year.
