Edo election: CSO holds voter education rally, canvasses support for Obaseki

A civil society group, No Sidon Look, at the weekend, held a voter education rally in Benin city, the Edo state capital, to sensitise the electorate on the need to turn out en masse on Saturday, September 19 to exercise their franchise.

The group specifically tasked the people of Edo to vote for a candidate with the pedigree and knowledge to sustain and improve on the present level of development in the state.

The group also reaffirmed its support for the reelection of Governor Godwin Obaseki, urging eligible voters in the state to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enable the governor to continue with his numerous achievements in the last three years and nine months.

Director-General of the organisation, Mr Portrait Peterson, who hailed the governor’s outstanding performance across all sectors of the state, charged the electorate to turn out with their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) on September 19 to ensure Obaseki’s reelection.

His words: “In the last two months, we have been on the streets of Edo state campaigning for Governor Obaseki who has done what two governors put together were unable to do in 16 years.

“We have gone round the 18 local government areas of the state and have testimonies of how the governor has affected the lives of Edo people in the grassroots, giving them hope for a better Edo.”

Peterson further noted: “Obaseki is the only man who has performed beyond all expectations. He has opened the eyes of Edo people to know that there is money in government and such money ought to be used in developing the state and its people.

“We as a movement will continue to engage the youths in all our activities to ensure we keep them busy as it’s a way of keeping them off crime.”

Meanwhile, Obaseki has been honoured as the Most Outstanding Governor of The Year 2019 by the Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists, Edo state chapter.

Presenting the award to the governor during his reelection campaign in Eyaen Wards 5 and 6, in Uhunmwode local government area, secretary-general of the association, Dr Charles Okhai, noted that the honour was on the back of the governor’s sterling performance.

Legit.ng had reported that Governor Obaseki on Tuesday, September 8 defeated the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu by over 17 points (Obaseki 57.73%; Ize-Iyamu 40.07%), in an online poll conducted by Channels Television in partnership with Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room.

The poll, according to the organisers, was put together to enable the general public to select their preferred gubernatorial candidates who are expected to feature in the station’s forthcoming debate programme.

Participants of the online poll were asked to make their choice from among the 14 candidates listed. Other notable candidates in the list include Jones Osagiobare of the Young Peoples Party and Lucky Osagie of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
