Edo governorship: Ize-Iyamu says he never attacked anyone with acid

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Edo governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu has denied the reports that he was expelled from the University of Benin for attacking a student.

Ize-Iyamu in a governorship debate on Sunday, September 13, described the reports as untrue, Premium Times reported.

He said there was never a time when he poured acid on a fellow student. The APC candidate also insisted that he graduated from the University of Benin.

Ize-Iyamu argued that he did not engage in criminal activities when he was in the university and that his records are there to verify.

“I graduated from the University of Benin. I was very active in the students’ union and my records are clear. People have alleged that I did that but I think they should go to the university authorities and find out exactly what was the offence," he said.

Meanwhile, with just six days to the governorship election in Edo, the power of incumbency factor may come into play, but it is a two-pronged tool, says Adams Oshiomhole, former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oshiomhole said this in an interview with Vanguard in which he also spoke on how the crisis between him and his successor, Godwin Obaseki, started

Oshiomhole, who noted that there was the incumbency factor in politics, however, added that it can only favour a governor who performs excellently in his first time.

In another news, a civil society group, No Sidon Look, at the weekend, held a voter education rally in Benin City, the Edo state capital, to sensitise the electorate on the need to turn out en masse on Saturday, September 19 to exercise their franchise.

The group specifically tasked the people of Edo to vote for a candidate with the pedigree and knowledge to sustain and improve on the present level of development in the state.

The group also reaffirmed its support for the reelection of Governor Godwin Obaseki, urging eligible voters in the state to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enable the governor to continue with his numerous achievements in the last three years and nine months.
