Peter Crouch wishes Spurs had signed Timo Werner or Callum Wilson

Peter Crouch has told the Daily Mail that he would have loved to have seen Tottenham Hotspur push the boat out to try and sign Timo Werner this summer, while he also admitted that he  cannot understand why Jose Mourinho did not do more to get Callum Wilson.

Spurs go into the final weeks of the transfer window desperately needing to add another striker to their ranks.

It is not going to be an easy task for Mourinho. They need a goalscorer who is good enough to contribute for a side looking to battle for a top four spot, but also willing to predominantly act as a cover for Harry Kane.

And Crouch suggested that Tottenham’s task has probably become even more difficult, as two of the players who may have been perfect for Spurs have already moved elsewhere during this window.

“I mentioned earlier Liverpool might regret letting Chelsea sign Timo Werner but I would have loved to have seen Tottenham go all out for him,” he told the Daily Mail.

“It wouldn’t have been a signing to the detriment of Harry Kane. I watched a lot of RB Leipzig in the Champions League last season and Werner is versatile. He could have played anywhere across a front three and really transformed Tottenham.

“That would have been a dream signing but why did Tottenham let Callum Wilson sign for Newcastle? He wouldn’t have caused the slightest bit of trouble if he wasn’t playing every week, he has got quality and would have fitted straight into the squad.”

The Daily Express is amongst the outlets to have suggested that Mourinho did want Wilson before his switch to St James’ Park.

So there are likely to be some Spurs fans just as surprised as Crouch that the Magpies landed the former Bournemouth man.

Werner meanwhile, would have been an incredibly ambitious target. Sky Sports noted that Chelsea paid £45 million to trigger his release clause.

While that has the potential to be a real bargain in today’s game, it does appear that Tottenham are not shopping in that sort of market during this window.
