Some Nigerian lawyers have started signing a petition to strip Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The petition follows the amendments the AGF made to the rules of professional conduct for legal practitioners (RPC), 2007.

The Cable reports that the petition was filed by one Izu Aniagu on www.change.org, where he accused Malami of taking the decision alone.

Part of the petition read: “The AGF took the decision alone and his actions constitute a threat to the rule of law. His action is totally shameful and is underserving of a lawyer in the rank of a Senio Advocate, let alone a Chief Law Officer of the federation.”

About 500 people had signed the petition so far on the website signalling the popularity of the petition against the controversial AGF.

The NBA had also kicked against the amendments, saying Malami did not follow due process.

Since his assumption of office, Malami has been fingered in various controversial issues.

Meanwhile, the decision from the office of Malami was on Sunday, September 13, vehemently rejected by the new national president of the NBA, Olumide Akpata.

Arguing that due process was not followed prior to the development, Akpata called on lawyers across the country to stick to reject the new initiative.

He said such decision can only be made by the general council of the bar, otherwise known as the Bar Council which comprises the AGF, the honourable Attorneys-General of all states in the country and twenty members of the NBA.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Edo state-born Akpata was sworn-in to lead the national legal body on Friday, August 28.

Akpata floored two rivals who are SANs in the election which was held in July 2020 to become the first lawyer to emerge president of the NBA before attaining the rank.
