Police posted outside home of Qld’s top doctor after death threats

QUEENSLAND’s top doctor has been forced to get a police detail after it she was subjected to deaths threats on social media.

Chief Health officer, Dr Jeanette Young, has been at the centre of controversy over the last week after a number of high profile border exemption issues.

AMA Queensland President Dr Chris Perry said the criticism toward her had been “toxic”.

“Jeannette now has a couple of police outside of her house, who go with her everywhere,” he told The Today Show on Monday.

“It’s been quite stressful and it hasn’t been helped by cowardly people who are threatening to take the life of a woman.”

Dr Young address the news at the daily COVID-19 update this morning, admitting the ordeal has been taking a toll on her.

“It has taken an enormous toll on me,” Dr Young said.

“But then this has taken an enormous toll on nearly every single person in our community. Every single person in our community in Queensland has had to give up an awful lot. And we can’t see a clear end to this.

“We’re going to all have to work this through together and work out how we can manage this as well go forward. I think this has been tough for everyone.”

She thanked the state government for helping her to feel supported in what she was doing.

“That helps me … That our government here in Queensland is prepared to support me to that extent.

“The support that they have shown to me has made me feel much, much safer doing what I need to do.”

Deputy Premier Steven Miles continued to stand by Dr Young, admitting they all had moments of self doubt.

“None of us asked to be in these roles and to have to make the kind of decisions we’ve had to make,” Mr Miles said.

“Dr Young has, I think, always done her best to make the right decisions for Queensland.

“Sometimes those decisions have been hard, the results have had impacts on people and individuals and their families, but the cumulative results of those decisions is Queensland having being kept safe.”
