NGO 'Wath Haawuk' holds charity run in Srinagar

A charity run was organised by Wath Haawuk, a budding NGO, focused on working for education of underprivileged children, from Duck Park to Nishat (4kms) for girls and the same route and back for boys (8kms). The participants in the event included some of the promising young athletes from the valley.

The run was flagged off by NIS qualified Athletic coach  Tahir Mir, who was also the guest of honour. Also, present on the occasion were Dr Omar Akhtar, of GMC, Srinagar and current KAS officer Sunil Kumar, both of whom took part in the run as well.

Before the event, General Secretary of the organisation, Nazish Hussain briefed the participants about the motive of the run, which was to help needy children achieve quality education and talked about the importance of education.

"Our NGO is geared towards providing quality education to children who lack basic learning facilities. Along with this promotion of health and awareness in these times are our prime focus," she said.

The studded lineup of runners included Insha Wadoo, Soliha Yousuf, Hanan Bashir, Ronak Manzoor, Nahida Manzoor, Sajidah Yousuf, Aqsa Hafeez, Sahil Shakeel, Mir Hafiz, Zulfiqar Ali, Gulbadan, Sajad Hussain, Shabnam Abbas, and Basit.

The run began in the wee hours of Thursday at 6:30 am and was concluded in little over an hour. After the event Hilal Ahmed, Chairman of Wath Haawuk thanked the participants for making the run a success. He stressed the need for promoting sports culture and help deprived kids to attain education for free.

"We have seen firsthand the lack of quality education in some areas on the outskirts of Srinagar. I and my team have worked tirelessly to help them in any way we can. But now we need to come together, to take this forward and ensure those children have a bright future. As a society it's our moral duty to help those in need especially when it comes to education," he said.

Right after this Athletic coach Mir Tahir distributed participation certificates among all and thanked Wath Haawuk for such an initiative. "Athletics in Kashmir is at an all-time low due to the happenings of the recent past as such the step taken by Hilal Ahmed and his team are praiseworthy. I believe together we can lift this sport to heights that we envision," Tahir said.

Dr Omar Akhtar, Urologist at GMC, Srinagar, laid emphasis on promoting good health through sports and thanked all for their efforts, pledging to help those children in need with their schooling needs.

The charity run was sponsored by Marble World, Muscle Studio, Yaseen Printing Press, New Thathroo Fabrics and JK Adventure Club.

The participants also appeared thrilled after taking part in the run and craved for more such opportunities of which Hilal Ahmed ( Chairman, Wath Haawuk) assured them.

"This organisation would serve as a platform for athletes to hone their skills and develop them so that they can compete at a higher-level, for which we have a newly created sports wing headed senior athlete Muzamil Hussain Mir, whose dream is to lift the athletics in Kashmir at any cost and he has strongly fought for this dream," he concluded.
