The Singapore Grip viewers divided by first episode
by Abbie BrayThe Singapore Grip viewers were left divided by the first episode with many saying they ‘struggled to get into it’.
The Singapore Grip adapts the Fall of Singapore in 1942 when the Empire of Japan invaded British-occupied territory during the Second World War.
Adapted from the JG Farrell novel of the same name, the six-part ITV drama starts in the thick of battle, as outlier Matthew Webb (Luke Treadaway) is caught up in the Battle of Singapore, desperately searching for an unnamed woman.
We then track backwards, with Matthew’s arrival in Singapore as the son of a powerful aristocrat (Game of Throne’s Charles Dance), quickly caught in the machinations of the Blackett family.
After the first installment viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts – with many struggling to get to grips with it.
‘I was quite looking forward to this series, but I am really struggling to get into the first episode,’ on tweeted.
Another commented: ‘I can’t be alone in not having a clue about what’s happening? It’s bizarre.’
While one added: ‘I can’t get into it, despite the quality cast. Not quite sure what I was expecting but I grew up watching #Tenko the bar was set high.’
‘I don’t have a clue what’s going on tbh,’ another said.
And while some viewers were confused by the drama – other fans were absolutely loving it.
One tweeted: ‘It’s a cool, sophisticated drama.’
Another said: ‘Loving it so far.’
While one added: ‘Excellent viewing. Can’t wait for next week!!! ….. Bedtime.’
The Singapore Grip airs on Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
