Weekend testing dips to 9.78 lakh, positivity rate climbs to 9.4%, 92,071 new cases recorded

New Delhi: In the past three days, India reported a total of 2,84,013 cases, which is more than the total tally of countries like Germany and Canada and only marginally less than the total cases reported in Italy, which was among the worst-hit countries in the initial days.

As the tests fell below the million mark, for the first time in a week in India, the positivity rate inched close to 10 per cent again.

Active cases 

The total number of active cases in the country stands at 9,86,598. More than 60 per cent of the active cases are concentrated in five states — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Number of deaths

In the last three days, 4,660 deaths were reported in India taking the toll to 79,722. The case fatality rate of the country currently stands at 1.67 per cent. According to the World Health Organization, as of 11 September, 215 countries/territories have been affected by the pandemic

There are more than 2.79 crore confirmed cases across the world with more than 9.05 lakh deaths, with a case fatality rate of 3.2 per cent.

Mortality rate

Punjab remains at the bottom of the list in terms of case fatality rate even as Maharashtra, which has seen the most deaths so far, is number 3 on the list. Eight states are above the national average of 1.67 per cent.

Daily tests 

For the first time since last Monday, daily Covid tests fell below the million mark. However, the numbers were better than last week’s 7,20,362. So far 5,72,39,428 total tests have been conducted.

Positivity rate

The weekend testing dip pushed the positivity rate to 9.4 per cent. As the graph shows, this rate has been on the rise for the past few days as over 90,000 daily positive cases have been recorded for five consecutive days now.

Recovered cases 

In the last 24 hours, 77,512 patients have been discharged. The total recovered cases stands at 37,80,107. The gap between recovered cases and active cases is consistently increasing and touched nearly 28 lakh (27,93,509) Sunday.

About 92 per cent of Covid cases in India have a mild form of the disease, Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan told Parliament Monday. According to him, oxygen therapy was required in only about 5.8 per cent of the cases and 1.7 per cent needed intensive care.

Total cases 

A total of 92,071 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in the country. Maharashtra continues to contribute a high number, recording more than 22,000 new cases.

Andhra Pradesh has contributed more than 9,800 new cases. Nearly 60 per cent of the total cases were contributed by Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

High burden states

In Maharashtra, almost 30 per cent or 2,90,344 cases of its total Covid tally of 10,60,308 cases, are active cases. The state has reported most deaths in the country and 418 of these occurred in the last 24 hours.

Of Tamil Nadu’s 5,02,759 total cases — 47,012 are active cases. In the last 24 hours, the state has reported 5,693 cases and the doubling time is now close to 62 days. The case fatality rate is the same as the national average.

Andhra Pradesh recorded 9,536 cases and 66 deaths in the last 24 hours. It has so far, seen 5.67,123 cases with a case fatality rate of 0.87 per cent.

In Karnataka, 99,203 cases are active of the total 4,59,445 cases. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 9,894 cases and 104 deaths with a case fatality rate of 1.59 per cent.

Uttar Pradesh has recorded 3,13,036 cases and 6,205 of these were reported in the last 24 hours. The state has 68,122 active cases so far.

Tests and positive cases

The tests in Maharashtra dipped again and Tamil Nadu, which conducted 82,387 tests in the last 24 hours, is now second to Uttar Pradesh’s 1,47,082 daily tests.
