Newcastle make move for €25m Roma attacker also wanted by Leicester
Newcastle have made an approach to sign Cengiz Under on loan from Roma, according to reports.
Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis all arrived at St James’ Park recently to spark Newcastle’s transfer window into life.
While Lewis strengthens their full-back options, the former Bournemouth duo add an extra dimension to their attack. Wilson even scored on his debut for the club.
According to Inside Futbol, Newcastle are not finished there, as Steve Bruce wants another attacking reinforcement.
The website claims that Newcastle have now asked about the chance to sign Under. The Turkish winger has fallen down the pecking order at Roma due to injuries and the form of Nicolo Zaniolo – although the latter’s own injury may make them reconsider Under’s future.
Nonetheless, they are still likely to move Under on before the transfer window closes – and the Turkish international has two admirers in England.
The report suggests Newcastle are battling with Leicester for his signature. There is also interest from Germany, where Hertha Berlin want to sign him.
Under, whose contract lasts until 2023, only made 10 league starts last season. He scored three goals across all competitions, before a change in Roma’s formation left him with fewer opportunities for gametime.
Roma want permanent sale
However, Newcastle are unlikely to be able to sign Under on the terms they want. Roma are holding out for a permanent sale of the player, as they need to reduce their wage bill.
The Italian club could sell for a fee in the region of €25m. That would then enable them to fund a move for Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik – who has been linked with Tottenham.
That may force them to turn their attention to someone like Troy Deeney, who suffered relegation with Watford last season.
