Amanzimtoti home needs helps during pandemic

Jona Vaughan Home urgently needs the Toti public’s help. Like many NPOs and businesses, lockdown has been an extremely difficult time for the home. Staff members have looked after the 84 mentally and physically challenged residents with so much care and love that to date they have had no Covid-19 infections.

“It also means that they, as family, are not allowed to go out to visit and haven’t seen sisters, brothers, children or relatives since 27 March, as they are afraid of getting infected and bring it back to the home,” said Jona Vaughan Home Parents Association chairman, Leon Maas.

Staff members have not been paid since June due to the financial crisis and extra financial burden of the Covid-19 pandemic and extra government regulations. Durban Coastal Mental Health, which runs the home, also has no funds for salaries. “Regardless, staff members still arrive at work every day as they are often the only family the residents know and they are loyal in looking after our heaven’s special gift.

“We have began an 80/80 campaign in conjunction with Durban Mental Health. We encourage members of the public to donate R80 and in turn find 80 people to donate R80. This money will be used to help with salaries, food hampers and so on. These awesome women need all the help they can get and more.”
