Spoilers: Corrie star reveals Nick's reaction after secret son discovery
by Stephen PattersonNick Tilsley (Ben Price) was left in shock in Coronation Street, as he discovered that he’s the father of Natasha Blakeman’s (Rachel Leskovac) 10-year-old son.
In Friday’s episode (September 11), Nick bumped into Natasha outside the hospital, and it’s safe to say that he was shocked.
Viewers will remember that the pair used to date when Natasha was on the cobbles a decade ago, but their relationship ended in disaster.
The reason as to why Nick was at the hospital was, of course, the fact that Oliver suffered another horrifying seizure.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about Nick coming face-to-face with Natasha, actor Ben Price said: ‘The way I played it, he was so overwhelmed with what was happening with Oliver.
‘He’s so locked into Oliver dying maybe, that he sees her and I think he half computes it, and then he’s like “I’ve got to go, nice to see you but I’ve got to go, this is too much for me.”
‘I think if they’d met without this, he’d be more like “Oh, nice to see you” but actually he’s like “This isn’t a good time.”’
In spite of Nick believing Natasha to have been at the hospital for a dermatology appointment, he soon discovered the truth when he overheard a conversation between she and a nurse, which confirmed that he was her 10-year-old son’s father.
Ben continued: ‘I think it’s a bit overwhelming for Nick, he likes a bit of proof, so he’s got to work it out, then he’s thinking “How can that be possible?”
‘Then there’s a whole load of emotions about whether she was lying and what lies were told, and then there’s guilt for him not being there, guilt about Leanne and what’s going on with Oliver.
‘I think once it’s confirmed to him or once he works it out and realises, I think it’s huge, it poleaxes him.
‘It’s very clever, it’s an amazing storyline, but what a time to find out you really do have a son, and your stepson is dying. I think it’s too much for him, I think he compartmentalises Natasha and Leanne for a while, he can’t deal with both.’
‘The moment once Nick meets him, it’s a very powerful moment. You’re meeting part of yourself, and I think he never realised what he didn’t have with Oliver and what he might have with his own son, and I think that kills him.
‘And then he’s got to tell Leanne and accept whatever Leanne says, then Leanne has got to deal with what’s happening with Oliver, so has he, and it might make him and Leanne split up, Natasha might not want him around, his son might not want him around.
‘”Another Tilsley, come on, a prodigy to run the factory, let’s have it”. Yes, he’s over the moon. But how can you be over the moon? It’s a completely messed up situation.
‘He goes from scenes of being completely elated to completely devastated when he realise Oliver’s going to die, to completely devastated that his son might not love him, to the point where he’s scared that Natasha might take him away, and I know what Nick’s like, he won’t let that happen, he’ll fight.’
Coronation Street continues Monday September 14 at 7:30pm on ITV.
