'We hope they die': Protesters gather outside of hospital where two deputies are receiving care following 'ambush'

Los Angeles protesters descended on a hospital where two deputies were taken after an “ambush” left them in critical condition.

“We hope they die,” the crowd reportedly chanted, blocking the entrance to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, California.

"They were saying, 'Death to the police,' and, 'Kill the police,' and these are sheriffs, but the message is still the same. They were using all types of curse words and derogatory terms," a faith leader told a local news outlet. "Unacceptable behavior because a hospital should be a sanctuary."

One of the protesters outside of the hospital was heard telling an officer, "That's why you're dying one by one, you stupid f---s. Y'all gonna die one by one. This ain't gonna stop."

"You're next with the f---ing hot pocket," another man shouted, according to Fox News.

“To the protesters blocking the entrance & exit of the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM yelling 'We hope they die' referring to 2 LA Sheriff's ambushed today in #Compton: DO NOT BLOCK EMERGENCY ENTRIES & EXITS TO THE HOSPITAL. People's lives are at stake when ambulances can't get through,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department tweeted early Sunday morning.

The two deputies were shot in Compton, California, on Saturday evening in what police have described as an “ambush.”

"That was a cowardly act," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. "The two deputies were doing their job, minding their own business, watching out for the safety of the people on the train. To see somebody just walk up and start shooting on them, it pisses me off. It dismays me at the same time. There's no pretty way to say it."

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect, who was described as a "dark-skinned male."

The names of the deputies injured in the attack have not been released, but the two officers were described as a 24-year-old man and a 31-year-old mother.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti condemned the protesters outside of the hospital during an interview on CNN.

"There’s no place in civilized society for anybody to draw an arm and to shoot our law enforcement officers that put their lives on the line. And I won’t ever let a couple voices that not only are uncalled for, but it’s abhorrent to say something like that when we have two deputies, who are sheriff's deputies, in grave condition," Garcetti said during a Sunday morning appearance on NBC News's Meet the Press.
