Star Wars: Squadrons CG trailer reveals the storyline from the Imperial perspective

A cat-and-mouse dogfight against a ruthless New Republic X-Wing

A new trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons was revealed on Monday, showing the aftermath of the Battle of Endor from the Imperial perspective. You can view the nearly seven minute video on YouTube. We’ve also embedded it above.

The evocative clip from EA’s Motive studio takes players to the Imperial dockyards over Var-Shaa, a jungle planet with deep canyons and flat, green plateaus. That’s where the Imperial Star Destroyer Overseer is fighting a delaying action against an overwhelming New Republic force. A starbase, identical to the design shown in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is seen breaking up and falling from orbit. Much of the action takes place in-atmosphere.

The action includes a cat-and-mouse dogfight between a masked New Republic X-Wing pilot and a highly-skilled TIE squadron leader flying an Interceptor. It’s clearly designed to give the good guys a bad name, highlighting a bloodthirsty duel between a fresh X-Wing and a heavily-damaged TIE Interceptor.

Watching it, I was reminded of a fan-made film from 2016. Titled Jakku: First Wave, it was the among the first times that Star Wars fans really got the chance to see the men and women behind the stormtroopers’ iconic white plate armor. This clip, which introduces the unnamed Imperial squadron leader, makes the conflict feel more personal than ever before.

Star Wars: Squadrons is set to be released on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on Oct. 2. It will be compatible with virtual reality headsets on PC and PS4, and will support flights sticks and throttles on PC and consoles.
