Lewis Hamilton wears Breonna Taylor t-shirt at Formula One race
by Alicia AdejobiLewis Hamilton made a bold call for justice for Breonna Taylor at today’s Formula One race, wearing a t-shirt of the young woman who was tragically killed by police.
The 35-year-old won the Formula One Tuscan GP on Sunday but made sure to acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement before celebrating his win.
As he collected his trophy from the podium, Lewis made the black power salute wearing a t-shirt which read: ‘Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor,’ on the front and had a portrait of the young woman’s face on the back with the slogan ‘Say Her Name’.
Before the race, Lewis posed in the t-shirt for an Instagram post and said in the caption: ‘It’s been 6 months since Breonna Taylor was murdered by policemen, in her own home. Still no justice has been served. We won’t stay silent. #JusticeForBreonnaTaylor.’
He also took the knee before the race began.
Breonna, 26, died in March after being shot by police officers several times when they entered her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky.
Six-time world champion Lewis has been particularly vocal about racism since protests began in May following the death of George Floyd, who died after police officers knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes while he struggled to breath.
Addressing Floyd’s heartbreaking death, Lewis previously wrote in an Instagram post: ‘I see those of you who are staying silent, some of you the biggest of stars yet you stay silent in the midst of injustice.
‘Not a sign from anybody in my industry which of course is a white dominated sport. I’m one of the only people of colour there yet I stand alone.’
He continued: ‘I would have thought by now you would see why this happens and say something about it but you can’t stand alongside us. Just know I know who you are and I see you…’
Lewis later supported BLM protestors who tore down a statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol.
‘If those people hadn’t taken down that statue honouring a racist slave trader, it would never have been removed,’ he said, later adding: ‘Nobody who did this should be honored. It was/is terrorism. Now. Then.
‘He never should’ve had a statue. I’m proud of the activists and organizers in Bristol, in the United Kingdom, who tore this down.’
