Now for F1? Aussie teen Oscar Piastri claims F3 world title, and his first words after winning were all class

Melbourne’s Oscar Piastri has won the Formula 3 Championship after finishing seventh in a thrilling final race of the year.

The seventh place finish was enough for Piastri, 19, to edge Théo Pourchaire to the title by three points as his nearest rival for the championship heading into the race, Logan Sargeant, crashed out.

Piastri and Prema teammate Sargeant were equal on points heading into the race and the latter was the favourite before the lights out as he lined up five places ahead of the Australian on the grid.

Cruelly, Sargeant’s hopes were ended in the first lap as he crashed out after making contact with Lirim Zendeli.

It left Piastri in no danger of finishing the championship behind his teammate but he still had to contend with the fast finishing Pourchaire, who hit hot form in the second half of the season.

Pourchaire pushed Piastri all the way, finishing third on the day and second in the championship.

While he celebrated his victory, Piastri took no joy in teammate Sargeant’s misfortune.

“I feel so bad for Logan, so sorry for Logan,” Piastri said on the team radio.

It was a chaotic weekend for Piastri, who had to retire in race one due to a DRS issue.

Piastri won two races, alongside six podiums and four fastest laps in the F3 season.
