‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’: The reboot we had prayed for

Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, ‘Gilmore Girls’ is an American comedy-drama TV series, starring Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, Alexis Bledel as Rory Gilmore, Kelly Bishop as Emily Gilmore, Scott Patterson as Luke Danes, Rose Abdoo as Berta, Keiko Agena as Lane Van Gerbig, Matt Czuchry as Logan Huntzberger, and Edward Herrmann as Richard Gilmore.

On 26 September 2006, ‘Gilmore Girls’ Season 7 premiered on Netflix and concluded on 15 May 2007 with 22 episodes. Almost a decade later, Netflix surprised fans with a 4-episode miniseries reboot with each episode representing a season.

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’ was touted to be a closure for fans who had been hooked to the show since its premiere in 2000. Tying the loose ends up, the reboot was Sherman-Palladino’s chance to conclude the series on her own terms.

Gilmore Girls Lorelai and Rory

The ‘Gilmore Girls’ reboot was a nostalgia fest for all the fans missing the eccentricities and tough love between the mother-daughter duo. The season picks up nine years later where the three Gilmore ladies are at life’s crossroads.

Lorelai’s relationship with Luke is stagnant; Rory’s career in journalism was stalled before it even began, and Emily’s world has turned upside down with the untimely death of her husband Richard. How the three women fight it out and cope with the sudden challenges life has thrown at them, that is what the reboot is all about.

Reboot 2.0- Another season for ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’ ended on a serious cliffhanger- Who was the father of Rory’s child? Throughout the season, Rory seemed to have been following her mother’s footsteps. Will she ever forge a future for herself, that too on her own terms? Questions are many, but the answer is only one- ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’ Season 2.

During a podcast interview with “The Hollywood Reporter”, Sherman-Palladino expressed her interest in a follow-up season. She confirmed that she was in talks with the main cast for a second season, but all of them were waiting for the timing to be right. Sherman-Palladino said,

Even Rory was surprised with Rory’s ending. At “Deadline’s” 2017 Emmy Contender Panel, Alexis Bledel also admitted to hoping for a different resolution for Rory. Bledel said,

‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’ Season 2: Rory’s final shot at redemption

When overwhelmed fans of the rebooted season started looking closely, they realised something was not quite right. They realised Rory wasn’t the same anymore. One would expect to see a more mature, wiser Rory than what she was in 2007, but it was like she hadn’t changed at all. Her thinking and actions were just like the 22-year old we saw in season 7. She seemed stuck.

Name a more iconic duo, I'll wait.

Was Rory’s fall from grace a part of Sherman-Palladino’s bigger plan? Was she destroying Rory’s image on purpose to prepare the audience for a more glorious redemption?

By the end of ‘Gilmore Girls’ Season 7, the audience had perceived Rory as an inherently flawed character. Many of her decisions made fans cringe. But when she finally made an appearance after nine years, she was neither successful in her choice of career, nor had she found stability in a relationship, and, to top it all, she was practically homeless.

Although the second instalment is yet to be announced, it is entirely possible that Rory’s journey was a build-up for what’s to become of her in future. Assuring fans at “Deadline’s” 2017 panel, Lauren Graham said the ending for Rory wasn’t actually an ending. She insisted, “That’s a cliffhanger”.

Graham’s statement just opened the door wide open for a revival, almost cementing our hopes for ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’ Season 2. We can’t wait! Do you hope to see Rory’s redemption in the revival of the reboot? Tell us in the comments below
