How Torquay United boss Gary Johnson will deal with Andrew Nelson 'shenanigan'
'We’ve got to calm him down a little bit, and then his quality will come in'
by Richard HughesTorquay United manager Gary Johnson said he will 'deal' with new player Andrew Nelson after the striker was substituted early on in the friendly against Hemel Hempstead Town following a spat which led to a yellow card.
Johnson said the incident might have been a red card in a National League game - so withdrew the player in the 3-2 win, which was United's first pre-season game of the summer.
“I’ll deal with Nelse," Johnson said. "He tries so hard to impress that he got involved in a shenanigan. You can’t do that, because in the National League, he’d have got sent off, and have got his teammates in trouble. We’d have had to play with ten men, and we haven’t got that fitness yet.
“He’ll learn," said Johnson of the 23-year-old who signed from Dundee. "But he’s got to calm down a little bit. I believe in him, and he’s got to not get as aerated as he did over that sort of incident.
"I just think it was because he was trying too hard. We’ve got to calm him down a little bit, and then his quality will come in."
Only a handful of officials from both clubs were inside the ground to watch the action. Torquay’s starting line-up included new signings Nelson, Fraser Kerr, Danny Wright, and Dean Moxey.
Nelson received his yellow card in the 19 minute, while Torquay’s best chance of a tight first half fell to Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, who went close from a Wright knock-down in the 25.
Lucas Covolan, who got the nod over Shaun MacDonald to play in goal, was busy in the opening stages of the second half, and Louis Slough had to make a diving, headed clearance to keep the scores level.
It was the visitors who scored first through Matt Bateman, whose near post header opened the scoring on 56 minutes.
United forced a series of corners before drawing level from the penalty spot in the 64 minute - Wright scoring after Olaf Koszela had been fouled in the box.Three minutes later Kyle Cameron gave Torquay the lead with an effort that came down off the underside of the bar to cross the line, but Hemel continued to threaten with Ben Jefford looking impressive.
Another new signing, Josh Umerah, who had come on early for Nelson, put the Gulls 3-1 ahead nine minutes from time, only for Kyle O’Connor Ajayi to pull a goal back for the visitors two minutes later. However, the Gulls, who will play a Bournemouth under-23s team on Tuesday night, held on for the win.
