Amidst Critic’s Backlash, Fans Cling To Hope. Will Hoops Get Renewed For A Second Season?
‘Hoops’, the recent animated comedy on Netflix, might not agree with everyone, but it has found its viewer base. So, will the show return for a second season? Let’s find out.
Much like his character Nick Miller in the hit comedy series ‘New Girl’, Jake Johnson plays a perpetually frustrated and angry basketball coach in Netflix’s new animated series ‘Hoops’, trading angry looks, shouting mindlessly, and spewing profanity in the role of Coach Ben Hopkins.

The series, which premiered on August 21, 2020, created a lot of buzz, especially given that it premiered around the NBA season. Fans are lining up with demands for a second season, and here is everything we know about the possibility of one.
Season 2 ‘Hoops’: The possibility of a return
The 10-episode adult sitcom debuted in late August, so the streaming device will likely take its time and announce its return post-October, if at all. Netflix waits at least a minimum of one month before it discloses any decision about a sequel.

The fact that critics were not very impressed by the show could be a glaring factor weighing heavily in the show’s renewal. But, harsh profanity and cheeky protagonists always finds its audience, and this show certainly did too.
Netflix has proven to be kinder to its animated shows in the past. So, if it is okay with the less-than sweet critique of the show (we are putting a bet that it is), then we can expect Season 2 of ‘Hoops’ to drop by summer or fall 2021, or at least an announcement soon.
So, the odds of the show getting renewed is higher than it getting cancelled. What is it going to about?
‘Hoops’ Season 1: The case of being grumpy and old
Season 1 focuses on Ben Hopkins (Jake Johnson), a basketball coach at Lenwood High School in Kentucky. His coaching techniques include acting out at games and talking trash with the referees.
jake johnsonI love talking w @justinlong He’s so funny. He changed @officialnewgirl for the better. The show would not have been what it is without him playing Genslinger. If you love #NewGirl then you should love @justinlong Here’s us talking if you like podcasts. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/life-is-short-with-justin-long/id1459899327?i=1000489085983
Ben’s journey in the show and the constant use of offensive language signals towards personal issues that he has yet to acknowledge. Basketball allows him a temporary break from everything else in his life. Season 1 also includes Ron Funches as Ben’s best friend Ron, and Natasha Leggero as Ben’s wife Shannon.
In the finale, Ben boasts to everyone about a recent sexual encounter he had with Shannon. The boasting doesn’t bring in anything good (obviously) and leads to some upsetting news for the basketball coach instead. In the final moments of season 1, Ben accepts a position at Henderson Prep.
Hoops Season 2 on Netflix
So, what should we expect from season 2, if there is one?
Season 2 update: Everything you need to know about ‘Hoops’
Season 1 ended with Ben being the narcissistic person that he is. He calls all his friends, colleagues, Shannon, and students to the gym to boast in front of them about his departure. But he is soon seen cursing his luck when he gets a flat tire on his way out of the town.
Knowing the character Ben, it won’t take long for him to fall back to his habits and find a way back to Lenwood High School. We can expect Shannon to be more involved in season 2, now that Ben is finally out of her life, she is ecstatic and possibly the only well-rounded and regular character in the show.
jake johnsonThank you to @caleyversfelt_official for sending this shirt and starting her cool company. Maybe take a minute & support her. She’s doing good stuff. @tidesofkindness
It will be interesting to see how Ben has changed, if at all, once he makes his inevitable return to the place where he burned all bridges and thought he was done with forever.
