by

The Cowboys used to have the most impressive stadium in the NFL when "Jerry World" opened as their home in 2009. Eleven years later, the Rams have their own state-of-the-art multibillion dollar palace in Los Angeles.

The Rams will try to show just how impressive SoFi Stadiumis — with a win — when they host the Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football"in Week 1 (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC). While the Rams are trying to rebound from their Super Bowl hangover with coach Sean McVay, the Cowboys are breaking in a new head coach, one-time Packers Super Bowl winner Mike McCarthy.

The Rams said goodbye to Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks in the offseason offensively, but Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey continue to shine brightest on the marquee defensively. Dak Prescott is looking for a big follow-up contract season with a passing game that was maintained with Kellen Moore and further upgraded with rookie first-round wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Cowboys vs. Rams odds for ‘Sunday Night Football'

The Cowboys have been consistently favored by a field goal since the early lines. That's a certainly interesting development, as long-time reliable Rams kicker now plays for the Cowboys. Los Angeles in brand-new SoFi Stadium, isn't being given much of a home-field advantage given Dallas has a strong base in the area in which usually holds remote training camp.

Cowboys vs. Rams all-time series

The Cowboys hold the slightest edge from their many NFC battles, 18-17 in 35 meetings. The Cowboys crushed the Rams last December at home, 44-21. Before then, the Rams took two consecutive shootouts, 30-22 and 35-30. Going back to 2011, the Cowboys are 4-2. This series has been tight all around. The teams are rather evenly matched again to open this season.

Three trends to know

— 70 percent of bettors like the Rams on the moneyline. 52 percent of bettors like them to cover the spread.

— 58 percent of bettors believe the game will over the significantly high point total.

— The Rams were 10-5-1 against the spread last season. The Cowboys were 9-7, making the game as hard to call as it seems on paper.

Three things to watch

Who replaces Gurley and Cooks most?

The Rams plan to use three backs — rookie Cam Akers, second-year change of pace Darrell Henderson and former top Gurley backup Malcolm Brown — to try to string together a strong rushing attack for McVay. Akers has a lot of talent and can emerge in the lead role soon, but expect a feeling-out period at first against a solid Cowboys run defense.

As for Cooks leaving, look for rookie Van Jefferson to make a few plays in his debut behind Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. Jefferson has been more impressive than Josh Reynolds in the No. 3 role in camp. Tight end Tyler Higbee also figures to remain a big part of the passing game, especially working against a team that still will have issues covering that position.

Will the Rams fold against Ezekiel Elliott again?

When the Cowboys routed the Rams 44-21 last December 15, Elliott rushed for 117 yards and 2 TDs on 24 carries. He also had 3 catches for 43 more yards in that game. The Rams still look rather weak against the run despite Donald and Elliott should have success working on their front seven for a second consecutive game.

Pressure on Prescott

Prescott is playing the season on the franchise tag with no long-term deal in place from Dallas. He is now operating with a new head coach in McCarthy, while still under Moore with Lamb in the mix. All signs point to him having another durable, big season passing and running.

It's been a tough offseason for Prescott off the field. But he's well-established as a respected leader and top-10 QB going into his fourth season. Look for him to come out making a statement with his loaded weapons.

Stat that matters

2 catches for 23 yards. Those are the numbers Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper has combinedin the two games he's been covered by Ramsey. The Cowboys should anticipate Ramsey shadowing Cooper again, however, and with Lamb and Michael Gallup as Prescott's two other No. 1-like receivers, they should be in great position to exploit the Rams' much weaker corners elsewhere. The Rams also lost a very good cover linebacker, Cory Littleton, in free agency, which can open things up for tight end Blake Jarwin, too.

Cowboys vs. Rams prediction

Donald and Ramsey can do only so much to slow down Elliott and Prescott working together in one of the league's most balanced and explosive offenses away from Kansas City. Jared Goff will do his best to keep up with a slightly different supporting cast, but the Cowboys' front seven gives them the edge to hold the lead and allow the running game to finish on the road.
