New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is holding a news conference on Wednesday as the state prepares to reopen schools for in-person instruction amid weeks of low coronavirus infection rates.
On Tuesday, Cuomo said the state will issue every K-12 school a daily Covid-19 "report card" that will allow parents to search for an array of information, including how many positive cases they're reporting, the number of students on site, the percentage of students and staff testing positive as well as the number of tests administered by the school.
"I think this will give parents confidence, teachers confidence, they'll know on a day-to-day basis exactly what is happening. They won't be reliant on communication from the school district, from the principal, from anyone else," Cuomo said at a press briefing.
Although New York has reported an infection rate below 1% for more than four weeks, Cuomo warned the state is now entering a "post-Labor Day phase" when the flu season threatens to complicate its Covid-19 response. That's because the state's labs that process Covid-19 tests also process influenza tests, which will add "more stress on the testing system."
The Democratic governor also blasted President Donald Trump on Tuesday for "actively trying to kill New York City," saying he's refused to approve or fund projects that the governor has championed, such as a proposed AirTrain to LaGuardia Airport, the Second Avenue subway line and failing to provide more federal coronavirus aid for the state and city.
