Qld records second day of zero COVID cases

QUEENSLAND has recorded another day of zero COVID cases but health authorities warn it’s still “too early to relax”.

It leaves 30 active cases in the Sunshine State.

24 of the active cases are in the West Moreton region, where the latest cluster has been centred.

There were only 2,934 tests in the last 24 hours which is well below the goal of 5,000 to 10,000 a day.

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeanette Young, said there was still an ongoing risk of infection around the Ipswich area and has urged anyone in the Goodna, Redbank and Redbank Plains areas to get tested if they experienced event the slightest of symptoms.

“We want to find the first case in a cluster,” Dr Young said.

“There are still some trains of transmission that we need to cap off.”

While Queensland reported no new cases, the World Health Organisation overnight had reported the highest number of infections since the pandemic began.

“This thing isn’t over,” Deputy Premier Steven Miles said.

“Globally, this pandemic is still getting worse. More people are still dying.”

Dr Young said there was still a lot they had to learn about the effects of the virus on the body, even for those who don’t experience severe symptoms.

“This is a disease that we’re learning more and more about every day,” she said.

“This is a disease … that affects every single cell in the body. It is really important that we minimise the number of people who get this disease.

“That is really, really important. That’s why we have the very strict protocols in Queensland for quarantine.”
