Unitech sees August revenues spike 43% sequentially

Taiwan-based Unitech PCB saw its August revenues surge 43.12% sequentially as it resumed shipment momentum for rigid-flex boards for AirPods 2 after losing big portions of orders to Korean suppliers in first-half 2020, according to industry sources.

The firm's revenues for the first eight months of the year plunged 43.3% on year to NT$8.28 billion (US$282.66 million), due partly to lackluster sales of automotive PCBs amid the pandemic.

Despite the sequential revenue increases in August, Unitech said its peak-season revenues this year will still fall significantly from the corresponding levels of 2019 due to lower unit prices offered by clients.

The company saw shipments for AirPods 2 contribute over 40% of its total revenues for 2019, the sources said.

Unitech will face new challenges in 2021, the biggest being new-generation AirPods and battery modules for iPhones that may adopt the combination of SiP and flexible PCB to replace rigid-flex boards next year, the sources said.

Unitech will have to seek more orders for rigid-flex boards from non-Apple vendors to sustain utilization of production lines. The company may also convert capacity for rigid-flex PCB for high-end HDI boards, the sources said.
