Andrew Gillum comes out as bisexual
by Mike BrestFormer Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum said that he's bisexual during an interview on the Tamron Hall Show.
“You didn’t ask the question. You put it out there as whether or not I identify as gay, and the answer is I don't identify as gay, but I do identify as bisexual," Gillum, 41, told Hall. "That is something that I have never shared publicly before.”
Gillum's wife, R. Jai Gillum, told Hall that most people "don't understand bisexuality."
“So many people just don’t understand bisexuality," she said. "Bisexuality is just something different. I just believe that love and sexuality exist on a spectrum. All I care about is what’s between us and what agreement we make.”
The interview with Hall came months after the former Tallahassee mayor left the spotlight during a stint in rehab and therapy following a drunken episode at a Miami hotel in March. Gillum was listed on a police report as having been in a hotel room where a man identified as Travis Dyson, a male escort, was believed to have suffered an overdose after using crystal meth. He called the incident a "wake-up call" and said that he had been suffering from alcoholism and depression.
In July, after leaving his rehab program, he posted a video on social media giving his supporters an update on his health.
"I had totally underestimated the impact that losing the race for governor had had on my life and on the way that those impacts started to show up in every aspect of my life," Gillum said. "I didn't want to talk emotionally or very deeply about what had happened in the race for governor because it was a constant reminder of failure and my own personal failures."
