Man dies after car hits trees and bushes in morning horror crash

A man in his 60s has died after his car crashed into trees and bushes this morning.

Emergency services were called to Moor Lane at the junction with Park Wall Road in Thornton to reports of a crash involving a single car - a Ford Mondeo - just before 5am.

The driver was taken to hospital but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

Investigations are ongoing but police said initial suggestions are that the car left the road and struck trees and bushes.

The accident caused the road and surrounding roads to be closed for several hours but they have all since reopened.

The man's family have been informed.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that an investigation is underway following a fatal traffic collision in Thornton this morning, Monday, September 14.

"At around 4.55am, emergency services were called to Moor Lane at the junction with Park Wall Road to reports of a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a Ford Mondeo.

"The driver, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital by ambulance but sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

"His next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers."

After the crash motorists were urged to seek alternative routes with A565 Moor Lane closed in both directions and heavy traffic from A5758 Broom's Cross Road to Lady Green Lane.

Police are urging witnesses to come forward.
