'India has limited COVID-19 cases and deaths per million': Health Minister Harsh Vardhan in Parliament

Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on Monday addressed the Monsoon Session 2020 of the Parliament on Day 1 and gave a statement in the Lok Sabha on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation in India. He said thatCOVID-19 cases per million population in the country have been limited to 3,328, whileCOVID-19 related deaths have been limited to 55 per million population.

"With our endeavour to manage COVID-19, India has been able to limit its cases and deaths to 3,328 cases and 55 deaths per million population respectively, which is one of the lowest in the world as compared to similarly affected countries," the Minister said.

Union Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan also said that there are primarily 13 states from which the maximum number of cases (more than one lakh) and deaths have been reported.

"Maximum cases and deaths primarily reported from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Kerala and Gujarat. All these reported more than 1 lakh cases," he said.

The Health Minister also informed the Parliament about the COVID-19 situation in the country.

"77,512 recoveries registered in the last 24 hours in India taking the total number of recoveries to 37,80,107 and recovery rate to 78 per cent. More than 60% of active cases are concentrated in 5 states- Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu," he said.

Meanwhile, with over 92,000 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count on Wednesday crossed the 48 lakh-mark, while the death toll is nearing the 80,000-mark as well.

At 9:30 AM on this day, the COVID-19 tally in the country has reached 48,46,428 cases, which include 9,86,598 active cases; 37,80,108 cured, discharged, or migrated patients, and 79,722 deaths.

According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as many as 92,071 new COVID-19 cases and 1,136 deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, marking a significant spike.

The Monsoon session 2020 of Parliament commenced today. This is the first Parliament session being held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. All safety measures have been initiated to conduct the session as per health guidelines amid COVID-19.
