The Fresno Ed Lab: Fresno State students won’t return to campuses this school year

by

Hello Education readers,

As mid-September approaches, some universities have already decided not to bring students back to campus this school year.

The California State University system - including Fresno State - is among the first to announce they will not be reopening campuses this spring. Ed Lab’s higher ed reporter Ashleigh Panoo broke the story this week.

Will other college campuses and k-12 schools follow suit?

On Friday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, said the current coronavirus numbers are “alarming,” and we won’t likely return to pre-COVID-19 life till late 2021.

California - Fresno in particular - faces multiple catastrophes simultaneously - the national health pandemic, racial inequity, and the blazing fires which have been exacerbated due to climate change throughout California.

All of these issues are being tackled in multiples ways by different people in our communities.

Addressing the issue of racial justice, Ed Labs k-12 reporter Monica Velez spoke to Black educators about the city’s need for more Black teachers. You can check out her story and other racial equity stories in Fresno at the Fresno Voices page.

What the Ed Lab is reading

LA Times recently reported if schools open ahead of the spring, they will likely open no earlier than November.

According to Ed Source, Long Beach Unified might continue with distance learning programs through at least January.

Distance learning has worsened inequities, and students need more resources to help support their education. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced $5.3 billion to help mitigate learning loss that can be used in various ways, including devices and internet access, mental health, and academic support.
