LASU: ASUU, NASU shut out VC, students as school resumes

- Protesting staff have stopped LASU VC from entering the institution

- Students were also shut out of the school as a result of the protest

- The workers are protesting non-payment of their salary increment

As students of the Lagos State University, Ojo Campus resumed on Monday, September 14, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) staged a protest to call attention to their demands.

The protesting staff also barred the vice-chancellor of the institution, Prof Olanrewaju Fagboun, and students from gaining access to the premises.

The protest is about the failure of the school management to pay increment in salaries promised by the Lagos state government.

The promise was reportedly made over a year ago.

According to Vanguard, members of the union took over the entrance of the university from security personnel and turned back both human and vehicular movements from going in and out of the premises.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that ahead of the proposed resumption of academic activities in Lagos and some other states of the federation, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 called for caution among the stakeholders.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha, cited how such haste escalated the COVID-19 management situation in some other countries.

Legit.ng gathered that Mustapha said it would be in the best interest of Nigeria to stick to the pattern proven effective since the national response was launched.

He further said that more sectors of the economy may soon be reopened, especially as the nation would be entering a new phase of the eased lockdown.

Also, Legit.ng reported that two days after the announcement of the resumption date for all schools in Lagos state the Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) unit of the state ministry of education warned the public to disregard a resumption time table flying around on social media.

The time-table claims to be the 2020/2021 academic calendar, and states that the first term of the session would start September 21, 2020 and end December 18, 2020.
