Edo election: INEC boss, IGP meet stakeholders ahead of guber poll

- All is set for the Edo state governorship election as stakeholders are already meeting to ensure a hitch-free exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police held a meeting with stakeholders in Benin city on Monday, September 14 ahead of the Edo state governorship election.

The meeting is part of preparations towards the smooth conduct of the exercise on Saturday, September 19.

INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu were in attendance.

Also, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Philip Shuaibu were also present.

Addressing the meeting, the INEC boss said the commission has met 12 of the necessary steps for the smooth conduct of the election.

He assured the electorates and the public that sensitive materials would be deployed as scheduled, adding that card readers will be used during the election.

In his remark, IGP Adamu revealed that the Nigeria Police Force has identified flashpoint for violence in the state and are under watch.

Meanwhile, Yiaga Africa; a citizen-led movement under the Watching The Vote (WTV) has deployed its cohort of 44 Master Trainers across all 18 local government areas in Edo state for the training of over 500 polling unit observers and 24 roving observers.

Legit.ng gathered that the training tagged; Election Day observation training was held in 42 training centres spread across all local government areas in the state.

This was followed by the training of 18 collation centre observers who will deploy to all 18 local government area collation centres to observe, document and report the process at the collation level.

In a related development, a civil society group, No Sidon Look, at the weekend, held a voter education rally in Benin city, the Edo state capital, to sensitise the electorate on the need to turn out en masse on Saturday, September 19 to exercise their franchise.

The group specifically tasked the people of Edo to vote for a candidate with the pedigree and knowledge to sustain and improve on the present level of development in the state.

The group also reaffirmed its support for the reelection of Governor Godwin Obaseki, urging eligible voters in the state to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enable the governor to continue with his numerous achievements in the last three years and nine months.
