Rape accused hits cop, flees from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital

The Ramol resident who is accused of raping a physically challenged woman was taken to the hospital for medical check-up, but escaped after seeking a visit to the washroom

A 46-year-old man from Ramol who is accused of raping a physically challenged woman and making her beg on the streets, on Sunday afternoon allegedly escaped from police custody at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after knocking down a police constable who had accompanied him for a medical check-up. A complaint in this regard has been filed with Shahibaug police.

Hemrajsinh Umedsinh(30), a constable with Nikol police was called to Muktidham police chowky under Nikol police station. There Hemrajsinh was asked by the concerned PSI to take Ramol resident Sanjay Vyas (46) to civil hospital for treatment. Vyas is accused of raping a physically handicapped woman and making her beg on the streets. After the woman had filed a complaint, Vyas was arrested by Nikol police.

Hemrajsinh brought Vyas in a police jeep to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and there Hemrajsinh took Vyas to the trauma ward. Vyas told Hemrajsinh that he wanted to go to the washroom.

In the washroom, Vyas allegedly started a scuffle with Hemrajsinh, and he overpowered Hemrajsinh and hit his head on a tub in the bathroom. Due to the impact, Hemrajsinh became unconscious and taking advantage of which Vyas escaped from the spot.

Later Hemrajsinh regained his senses and informed his superiors, and a complaint was filed against Vyas with Shahibaug police under IPC section 186 ( Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant to perform his duty) and 224 ( Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension).
