Man in standoff with deputies kills self with officer's gun
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A man fatally shot himself with deputy’s gun following a standoff with police outside a home east of Wichita, authorities in south-central Kansas said.
The incident began Sunday morning when Butler County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home for a domestic violence report, television station KAKE reported. Arriving deputies said they were confronted by a man who lived at home and who initially barricaded himself in the house. He later ran from the house to a bus parked outside before approaching deputies, officials said.
Sheriff Kelly Herzet said deputies used stun guns and other less-than-lethal options to try to subdue the man, but those attempts failed. The man then reached for one of the deputy’s guns and shot himself in the chest, Herzet said.
The man was treated by medics, but died at the scene, officials said. Authorities had not released the man’s name by Monday morning.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting.
A woman who originally reported the domestic violence and her two children were not at the house when the shooting occurred, police said.
