Derby revealed to be the 'most hungover' city in the UK

It has beat London, Manchester and Newcastle

Derby has been ranked as the most hungover city in the UK, according to new research.

After analysing Google search data, the nutrition and well-being company Your Zooki found that 168,000 people in the UK are searching for a “hangover cure” every year.

It then ranked the top 20 cities and Derby was revealed as the most hungover city in the UK, beating London, Manchester and Newcastle to the post.

The residents of Derby make 3,120 annual searches for "hangover cures", which works out as 11.54 per 1,000 people of the city's population.

This was followed by Newcastle, with 8.73 searches per 1,000 people and Manchester with 7.89 searches per 1,000 people.

London was ranked as the most hungover region, with 496 annual searches per 100,000 people, while the whole East Midlands was second from the bottom with 295.

There are many theories as to why people get hangovers after a heavy night of drinking, from dehydration and mixing grape and grain to alcohol withdrawal.

Your Zooki nutritionist Amanda Callenberg claimed it is a blend of dehydration through drinking too much and the toxic content of alcohol which contributes to a bad hangover.

Ms Callenberg explained that alcohol contains ethanol, which s a toxic chemical that needs to be broken down by the liver, and it also makes us dehydrated.

She added: “When we become severely dehydrated our bodies can’t remove these toxins, so they stay circulating in our bodies.

"This causes irritation and inflammation which can damage vital organs like the stomach, brain, liver and others.

"It is this dehydration that causes the classic hangover symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting.”

Most adults have had the unfortunate experience of a terrible hangover - the headaches, the nausea - and will have often tried a host of different strange remedies to fix it.

Some promote the more natural remedies, like drinking six raw eggs or eating liver, while scientists have even dedicated their careers to find the ultimate cure.

According to Your Zooki, some of the best hangover cures include eating a balanced meal before you go out, hydrating throughout the night, and having a big hearty breakfast.

It also recommends replacing nutrients lost through drinking a lot by eating lots of fruit and vegetables on the day after a night out.
